About Us

Sometime, in the 1800's the Zenas Quinn family of eastern Duplin County, North Carolina operated a farm store on the family farm to supply goods for the farm operation, the extended family, and local neighbors. After some time, one of Zenas's sons, Zenas James, agreed to be responsible for managing the store and making it more fiscally sound.

This became "Z. J. Quinn & Sons" store and livestock business. The store supplied staple goods, hardware, and fence posts for the community. They also trained, traded, bought & sold horses, mules, and cows for local residents.

In the 1920's one of Z. J. Quinn's sons, Corbett, decided to open a new store to replace and expand the family farm store. He partnered with Mr. G. B. Parker and they opened the new store together. Lemon Quinn, Corbett’s brother, began operating the livestock business and farmed. After a couple of years, Corbett & Mr. Parker decided to dissolve their partnership. Corbett bought Mr. Parker's half of the business and named the business "C. L. QUINN General Merchandising". Mr. Parker left and opened a new store in another location.

For several years Corbett’s business thrived in the small Potters Hill community of eastern Duplin County among the many other businesses there. In 1946, one of Corbett's sons, Daniel, married and began managing the store and eventually became the owner, renaming it "D. L. QUINN General Merchandise". In February, 1957 the store was completely destroyed by fire. With his father’s help, a new building was erected and the business reopened. It would later become known as "QUINN'S SUPER MARKET"; then later "QUINN SUPERMARKET & HARDWARE" to reflect the diversity of products sold.

Through ups and downs, with hard work, long hours, and the grace of God, the business survived, thrived and expanded. Dan and his wife Beulah ran the store and raised a new generation of children, most of which worked in the store at one time or another.

In 1975, I married and began working full time with my father, Dan. Over the years many things changed but our commitment to helping the community remained the same. In 2013 my father passed and I became the next generation owner. The store was renamed again to "QUINN'S GENERAL STORE" to shorten and more appropriately reflect the nature of our business. We have always tried to meet the needs of the local community and surrounding area as best as possible.

Hopefully, with God's help and the support of the local community, we will continue to do so for many years and generations to come.

Thank You, Mark Quinn
